New Energy Vehicle Sales: A 2023 Recap and 2024 Projections

In the wake of 2024, several automotive companies have unveiled their 2023 new energy vehicle (NEV) sales records. BYD has surged past the 3 million mark, claiming the top spot in 2023 NEV sales. While other companies trail behind BYD, entities like GAC Aion, Ideal Automobile, NIO, XPeng Motors, Zeekr Car, and AITO WENJIE have showcased commendable performances. Industry insiders predict intensified competition in the 2024 NEV market, with traditional automakers, emerging forces, and international companies escalating investments and research into NEVs, aiming to capture larger market shares. Forecasts indicate rapid growth in the NEV market over the next few years.

Chinese EV Brand Sales 2023

Swift Evolution Among New and Established Automakers

From 74,000 units sold in 2021 to a staggering 3.02 million in 2023, BYD's dominance not only surpassed joint venture brands to become China's top-selling automobile brand but also set new industry benchmarks. Sales data from BYD indicates a record-breaking 3.02 million units sold in 2023, surpassing the initial 3 million targets set at the beginning of the year, cementing its position as the global leader in NEV sales and achieving the highest annual sales record in the Chinese automotive industry.

Cui Dongshu, Secretary-General of the China Passenger Car Association (CPCA), highlighted the strengthening presence of traditional domestic brands in the NEV sector, citing the emergence of strong contenders such as BYD, GAC Aion, and Changan Automobile.

Flourishing New Energy Vehicle Ventures

In recent years, several traditional domestic automakers have intensified efforts in the NEV market by establishing entirely new NEV brands and increasing investments in NEV research. In 2023, alongside BYD's unprecedented sales, traditional domestic brands such as GAC Group, SAIC Motor Passenger Vehicle Company, Changan Automobile, and Geely Automobile achieved remarkable results in the NEV market. For instance, GAC Aion, under GAC Group, surpassed 480,000 units sold in 2023, maintaining a leading position in the pure electric vehicle market. Notably, on December 28, 2023, it reached the milestone of producing 1 million vehicles in just 4 years and 8 months, setting records as the "fastest automotive brand to reach 1 million units globally." Geely Automobile, propelled by brands like Geely, Lynk & Co, Zeekr, and Jiyue, witnessed a substantial year-on-year increase of over 48%, accumulating a total of 487,461 NEV sales. Changan Automobile's independently branded NEVs surpassed 470,000 units in 2023.

Apart from the robust growth of traditional domestic automakers in the NEV segment, emerging forces in the automotive industry are swiftly expanding. The top three among these newcomers shifted from "Hozon-Li-Nio" in 2022 to "Li-Nio-LeapMotor" in 2023. Ideal Automobile led the chart with 376,030 deliveries in 2023, marking a 182.2% year-on-year surge. NIO secured the second position, delivering 160,038 vehicles, reflecting a 30.7% increase. Following closely is XPeng Motors, with a cumulative delivery of 144,155 vehicles, boasting a growth rate of over 29%. XPeng was trailed by Xiaopeng Motors, securing the fourth rank with a total of 141,601 new vehicle deliveries and a 17% year-on-year increase. Meanwhile, the company that clinched the top spot among emerging automakers in 2022, NIO, slipped to the fifth position in 2023, with a total annual delivery of 127,496 vehicles.

Their annual deliveries reached 1.81 million, slightly edging past their initial target of 1.8 million, primarily attributed to robust sales in China.

Simultaneously, BYD announced remarkable achievements on January 1st, reporting record-breaking December sales of 341,043 EVs, inclusive of plug-in hybrids. Their fourth-quarter sales peaked at 942,779, culminating in an annual sales figure of 3,012,906, exceeding BYD's ambitious three-million target.
